Step 1 - Pleasant Greeting

You are meeting with one of your co-workers, someone you have a relationship with, more importantly, someone who is working with you to achieve the organizational goals.  Remember, all people want to be treated with Value and Respect.

The person you are meeting with is not the issue, the behavior is, so when you meet and greet them, use this time to build or maintain a common connection or bond.  The focus for the ensuing discussion should always be about the behavior, so it is important to separate the behavior from the person visually.   Take it from them and set it on a table (literally).   It is best to have a written example or document already prepared to separate the person from the behavior.

Step 1 addresses the usual failure of: Fail to make the counseling about the behavior and not the person.  You are supportive of the person and attempting to maintain the relationship with this person while getting them to change the performance behavior.  Helps create an organized method.
